I’m finally getting a chance for another quick update. The lady, who I learned is named Dawn, decided that I must be hungry. She was right. Maybe she could hear my tummy growling. Even though there was food in the box with me, it was inside a can I couldn’t open. After the chocolate fiasco, I guess my hostesses are learning.

Everything she gave me to eat except the carrot came from her garden. She picked them a few days ago before a killing frost, but they are still fresh and yummy. Check out that big white thing. It’s a radish! She sliced me some, but she wanted everyone to see how big they get. It was sweet and yummy and not at all spicy like some radishes can be. It’s called a Daikon radish. She mentioned that this is the first year they have grown them. The other veggies are turnip greens and peppers - banana and bell. This tiny bell pepper is the last one left, but Dawn said they had a wonderful harvest of them this year.

After I ate my fill, finishing with the sweet little carrot, I called home. It was nice to talk to Mom. She had already caught wind of my harrowing day, but calmed down after we visited for awhile. I didn’t get to post last night, because the lights went out for a bit and we had lots of lightning. I’m sure glad that man found me when he did and I didn’t have to stay outside with just my box for shelter in all of that. The dogs who live here were afraid, but I stayed brave through it all.

More later,

Gulli

PS I forgot to mention that I met some more critters who live here during dinner. The ducks are Mrs. Duck and her son Junior. They used to live on Dawn’s grandma’s countertop. Now they live here on hers. Boy can that Junior eat. I was glad we had a lot to choose from.

Then there was Mrs. Hen who also lives on the countertop. She has eggs in her nest in addition to those round things that she told me are oak galls. It seems that Dawn is collecting them to use in nature dyeing, but doesn’t have very many yet. The stuff in the jar is also for nature dyeing. It’s onion skins! Mrs. Hen said they are the last ones from the garden. Check out the stuff she dyed from the last batch she saved.
